Gastroenterology is the diagnosis, management and treatment of digestive system problems. Your gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) is an organ system that’s responsible for transporting food, its digestion, nutrient absorption and, managing waste products. It includes the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon and rectum), pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.

Mount Stuart Hospital offers extensive on-site diagnostic facilities including x-ray, ultrasound, and MRI and a full range of endoscopy services to diagnose and treat gastroenterology conditions. We provide colonoscopy for the large bowel, gastroscopy for the oesophagus and stomach and, ERCP for the pancreas and main bile ducts.

Our experienced gastroenterologists work in close collaboration with clinical dieticians who have specific expertise in the dietary management of gastro-intestinal disorders as well as colorectal and bariatric surgeons as required.

We see patients who have the recent onset of common digestive disorders like acid reflux, heartburn and irritable bowel disease and those with chronic GI tract problems such as Crohn’s disease and digestive cancers. Many patients require long term monitoring and treatment.
